niharikaaaaaa9 's review for:
Little Beach Street Bakery
by Jenny Colgan
This book was meh. The first half started out with promise - Polly's story was compelling, and I found myself rooting for her and the town of Peaborne.
The second half, however, seemed to drag on. To me, it felt as though the author put in unnecessary details and twists into the story with the sole purpose of just stretching out the plot. In fact, the second half of the story was littered with irrelevant subplots and characters. I only finished the second half so that I could get the feel-good, happy feeling at the end of the book.
One thing that really annoyed me about the book (and contributed to the three star rating) was Polly's "best friend", Kerensa. She was infuriatingly annoying, and her whole character was based on being rude to everyone around her - mostly Polly, but also the other characters in Peaborne. She was described as being very pretty, and it's almost as if the author used that to excuse her appalling behavior. Some choice quotes from Kerensa:
Polly: "You'll terrify him"
Kerensa: "That's fun for me"
Kerensa: "It's all right, you wouldn't have looked as good as me even if you were trying"
(The author follows this up with "Polly knew what she was really saying", but it's unclear to me what the subtext is supposed to be)
