A Court of Thorns and Roses
by Sarah J. Maas
Time Spent Reading – 6 hours 33 minutes
Setting – Wanadongri, Nagpur – my room, gloomy nights. I wanted to read something related to beauty and the beast since I was having trouble believing that I'll be loved for just being me.
Mood – I started off the book hoping for a story where a guy gets loved for who he is but I was disappointed by the end.
Why I picked it up – The only book related to beauty and the beast that Wafa recommended.
What It’s About –
A mortal girl, Fayre is taken to the faerie land as punishment for killing one. She gets a huge Stockholm syndrome and falls for her kidnapper. Fayre then has to do 3 tasks or solve a riddle to rid the Faeries from their dictator, Amarantha.
How It Made Me Feel –
I liked the book when it first started but later on realized that there is no beast. There's just a tall good looking furry control freak who wants to keep Fayre caged. I liked Rhys more than the other characters but then again he did give her the dark tattoo and she'll probably end up regretting making a deal with him. I was expecting a lot more based on how much the book is praised.
What I Liked –
I liked the character development throughout the book but in retrospect I don't think it was character development but instead I think I just got to know the characters better as time passed. I hated Rhys and Nesta at the start of the book but I liked them both a lot before the book ended.
Song(s) That I Associate This Book With –
None.
Favorite Character From The Book –
Nesta. I hated her at the start but I loved how she turned around at the end and supported Fayre despite her wish to go on a suicide mission. I liked Rhys too but he comes a close second. I think both of these characters are classic 'wolf in sheep's skin' and I have always loved that sort of characters.
Most Hated Character From the Book –
Tamlin. Even though the book was written to make me like Tamlin, I ended up not liking him. I felt like he was mostly with Fayre for possession and his curse. I doubt I'd wanna be with someone like him.
Favorite Part Of The Book –
I liked the part when Fayre left her family. Her dad told her not to come back which is a very selfless thing to say because he didn't know he would be getting those riches in return. He wanted her to stay for selfish reasons but he knew what was better for her.
My Favorite Line From The Book That I Highlighted –
"He said my name with such ... intimacy" I've always thought names are one of the most intimate part of socializing but I don't think most people would reciprocate.
What I Didn't Like –
I didn't like how superficial their relationship was and how predictable the answer to the riddle was. I also almost perfectly predicted that Fayre would do all three tasks properly but Amarantha would still fuck her over.
My Final Thoughts –
I rated this a 5 out of 10. I don't think I'd recommend this to someone who'd want to read something Beauty and the Beast related but since I haven't read anything else, I guess I have no other choice. This mostly reads out like a furry fantasy but some people might actually be into that sort of thing. I think the character of Tamlin in the book could be placed under 'morally gray characters', and I'm not a huge fan of it but I'd understand the appeal. I like some morally gray characters too but it is mostly people trying to be a better person like Arthur Morgan but the rest of my favorite characters are all god's men like Peter Parker, Clark Kent and Heracles from Wearing the Lion.
