A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

5.0

OVERALL RATING: 5/5 stars! This book gave me whiplash with all of the sudden plot twists and turns. It's unlike any murder mystery I have read, in that it takes place years after the murder, and that it's structured differently. We get to read bits of Pip's report interspersed with the story, and it contains many interviews, which add to the intrigue. Absolutely worth the read.
PLOT: 5/5 stars. The plot was suspenseful and captivating. My interest was captured within the first few pages, and Holly Jackson didn't release it until the last words of the epilogue.
STRUCTURE: 5/5 stars. I really enjoyed the way that the storyline was peppered with interviews and reports. The structure was chronological, and although it got a bit messy as more details and secrets were revealed, that messiness only added to the suspense.
SETTING: 3/5 stars. The setting was decent, but I would've liked a little more detail about it. It was very difficult to picture some of the major settings, and it was even harder to piece together the places in relation to one another. A map would've been helpful!
THEME: 5/5 stars. It's been a while since I read a good murder mystery, and even longer since I read one as rich as this one!
CHARACTERS: 4.5/5 stars. I enjoyed the way certain character's lives were revealed piece by piece, and the thorough development of all characters. Each character felt unique and distinct in their personalities.
DIALOGUE: 5/5 stars. Jackson skillfully used dialogue to demonstrate their growth and change. Ravi and Pip's banter was entertaining, and Pippa's tone and demeanor changed quite realistically in different scenarios.
