Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

4.0

Poison Study is a fantasy novel about Yelena, a prisoner once facing execution. But she is given an opportunity to be the Commander's food taster. The premise was so interesting that this was on my tbr forever. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would.

Yelena, our main protagonist, was definitely a high of this book. This was the fiesty heroine that I've been wanting to read. Most of the times whenever a book has a fiesty character I often find them annoying but not Yelena thank god. Reading about her trying to overcome her past was very interesting. The internal struggle was very gripping to read. I also liked that she actually trained to become a better fighter and that she improves throughout the book, rather than becoming so skilled in fighter after 1 or 2 training sessions. But despite all of these qualities, for some reason I didn't connect with her. I liked her but I wasn't in love with this character.

The romance in this book is very well done. When our love interest was introduced, I didn't even know he would even be the love interest. It was done subtly and it seeped into the plot but never overtaking the plot. It still remained as a fantasy novel. The progression of the relationship was very entertaining to read.

Overall Poison Study is a fun read with good characters with enjoyable romance. There were times when the dialogue was a little off and I didn't feel connected with Yelena, but the other characters were so wonderful. If you're looking for a fun read, go for this book. You'll have fun.
