Gripping story about a young man who goes off to war and ends up in the worst possible situation--several times over. Louie Zamperini's tale is a marvel that deserves to be more widely known than it is. In fact, some events that are recounted seem so incredible, so unlikely, that I had a hard time buying it. But is that the book's fault? Unbelievable things do happen.

The book begins with a short section describing Louie's pre-war life growing up in California, a troubled and directionless youth until he takes up running. Turns out he's pretty fast, and he channels his energy into the sport. Then, war breaks out, and like many young men of the day Louie enlists. The next sections describe his life in the armed forces, before finally the meat of the book, which details an incredible, gripping survival story. You will want to keep reading to find out just how this young man deals with each fresh hell presented to him--and survives to tell about it.

While the storytelling becomes torturous (fittingly) at times, it's worthwhile to push through and learn the whole story of Louie Zamperini.
