Edit to say part two is so goooooood!!! I'm happy I gave the series a chance.

Oh boy.
First of all, let's get the complaints out of the way.
1. I don't know how many times I wanted to scream "I KNOW!! STOP REPEATING THE SAME SENTENCE OR REPLAYING A SCENE THAT HAPPENED LITERALLY TWO SENTENCES AGO!!!!" This could have been at least a hundred pages shorter if the information was told only once, twice if it was told long time ago!!
2. There is no romance in this story, and whoever's reviews I've seen talking about the romance and if it's X or Y... what are you talking about? Did we read the same book? There is no romance. There is a part of the plot that some might call romance but if you understand the character that the romance is happening with, you'd understand that that is not romance at all.
3. Those of you who talk about "the plot twist": thanks for ruining the book a little for me. I kept second guessing everyone's intentions and couldn't get attached to almost anyone, waiting for them to be evil all along. And it's not the case. Some characters find information about themselves and let themselves finally believe it, but we as the readers are not lied to or deceived, we are seeing everything through their eyes and what we don't see is what they don't want to see themselves, that's all.

That being said: cool plot, all my love to Violet, absolute queen!!! Came here for the gay romance (and was thoroughly disappointed) and was given a female character who I'd actually like to meet and chat with instead. And no, it's not because she is a warrior, I like the feminine characters too, it's the fact that she is like "this is who my family is. F that, in my own person. I'll show everyone through bravery and loyalty who I am". And I love that! I want more characters like this, women who are believably good at fighting for very reasonable reasons, and who are also incredibly good friends!! Honestly the only thing that bothered me is the implication that she might have feelings for someone who she is friends with, but by the end you understand why that might be the case. Again, understanding the characters is very important to understanding the "romance".

About Will... yeah, he is alright. Sometimes his actions are a bit inconsistent and he as a person is not someone who I'd like to hang out with, but it kind of makes sense.

James is not a main character, and people should stop talking about him as if he is. There is a chapter where the characters (and the author, I feel) completely forget about him. At the end of the chapter there is one sentence talking about them remembering him and I was rolling my eyes so hard.

I'm intrigued by the ending and want to know what happens next.
