Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan

5.0

"The Age of Kings is dead . . . and I have killed it."

Combining a unique magic system with revolutionary war-like era muskets and gun battles, Promise of Blood was an amazing start to the Powder Mage Trilogy. I really enjoyed this book. Starting where most other books (without the magic) like this end, Promise of Blood explores the story of the aftermath of overthrowing an oppressive monarchy and the struggles to protect the people from powerful outside enemies that would see them enslaved or destroyed.

Filled with incredible fights, both magical and non-magical, this book is great for anyone who likes military novels or fantasy novels without the typical fantasy beings (elves, dwarves, orcs...). Characters showed depth the longer you spent time with them and the pacing is fairly quick, even with some longer chapters. Something always seemed to be happening to our heroes and the twists and turns of the book did not feel cheap or theatrically out of place.

Excited to keep reading this series and my only gripe is that I wish I had started this sooner. Happy Reading!
