The Historical Chronicles of Elinor Sturgeon and the Last Human Colony by R. T. Kilgore

4.0

Elinor was searching for suitable planet to colonize on behalf of the last human colony. She has a run with the Pars, an alien race who offers to rescue the dwindling remains of her colony, but at a price of course. The humans are essentially drafted into a war with the Vokkna, the enemies of the Pars. At first the different Par names were confusing but I quickly past it. The story had a bit of a slow start due to worldbuilding and scifi explanations but I wasn't bored at all. It held my focus from start to finish. Adored the intricate, original world building and cultural experiences. I found the take on Par pregnancy intriguing and a huge contrast from the parasitic nature of human gestation. I particularly appreciated the pictures at the start of chapters as they helped a lot with visualizing the main characters. There was very little romance between Elinor and Les. In fact she spent a lot of the book antagonizing him which I couldn't blame her for given their ugly beginning. The cover gave me crazy graphic novel vibes. There were a few typos that took me out of the story and Elinor's refusal to communicate frustrated me at times. But I was thoroughly entertained. Looking forward to the sequel as it ended on a cliffhanger.
