Takeover: The Complete Series by Lana Grayson

5.0

It is a ménage story about the clash of two clans – the Atwoods and the Bennetts, who are at war with each other. Their hatred for the other knows no bounds, going as far as plotting to not only take over the familial business but also to destroy the other’s legacy and bury them six feet under.

It is a trilogy consisting of:

Takeover (Legacy #1)

Controlling Interests (Legacy #2)

Capital Risk (Legacy #3)

It is now available as a complete series by the name of “Takeover”.

The book starts with a hostile takeover of the Atwoods’ agro-business by the Bennetts, after the death of senior Atwood as well as his male heirs, leaving a grieving wife and a young college-going daughter Sarah in their wake.

“It wasn’t just a hostile takeover. It was war.” (Sarah)

The Bennetts are a family of four, with the evil father-figure of Darius Bennett leading his three sons, Nicholas, Max, and Reed to the depths of hell.

“If the devil hid within beauty, I stared into a golden halo of absolute evil.” (Sarah)

It was a very long read, but every bit of it was just worth it. I would like to bill it as an erotic thriller with varying shades of BDSM. A gripping story, it is a dark and dangerous romance for which the statement “the characters have shades of grey” seems childish because some of them are dark and forbidding, while one is just laced with pure evil.

“She called me cruel. I believed her. She labeled me a demon. What defense could I give? She claimed she didn’t trust me. She lied. How many times would I be forced to destroy that innocence?” (Nicholas)

It has been written from the viewpoint of Nicholas, the eldest Bennett heir, and Sarah, the only surviving Atwood kid, with chapters alternating between the two of them. All the Bennett and Atwood family members play an important role in the formation of the story, so much so, that in the end, Max and Reed each have a chapter of their own.

“I wanted out, and this was it. My own life, my own future, my own everything.” (Reed)

It was beautiful to read how even from such hatred blossomed a pure romance and unconditional love. Loved both Sarah and Nicholas, how Sarah surfaced stronger after every beating (physical, emotional or mental) and how Nicholas became a better man despite such flaws in his personality. All the characters were perfectly developed! It stays true to the saying that “there can only be one true love”, despite the sharing of Sarah among the three Bennett brothers (all thanks to a stupid clause in senior Atwood’s will).

“My motivations weren’t honorable. I wouldn’t be the one to protect her. I hunted her to ensure she had survived. And I’d rescue her if only to become the man who would ultimately break her.” (Nicholas)

Darius is the epitome of evilness, bordering on psychotic behavior. Some parts, as already mentioned by the author, were too cringe-worthy to read, described in stark detail thereby making it more realistic than anything else, just can’t imagine how can someone be this perverse. I haven’t read a more depraved story than this, but man was I hooked, to each and every sordid detail.

“I should have simply killed you and ended this charade.” (Darius)

A story where the flame of revenge burns brighter with each passing page. It will boggle your mind figuring out as to who is taking revenge from whom. But there is also hope, a lot of it and it just strengthens when you see the loving that came out after all the trials Nick and Sarah had to go through.

“How fitting, punishing a man who had inflicted me with the same symptoms, the same pain, the same humiliations?” (Sarah)

Not to mention the generous amounts of suspense which has the reader on tenterhooks! This book had me hanging onto every word, as to what’s going to happen next and then that sigh of relief when the past events are unfolded.

“Then, my dear, we will die as a family.” (Darius)

Also, along with the dark romance and BDSM, the titles are done full justice as the various aspects of a dynastic business are touched upon.

This mind-blowing trilogy is absolutely a must read! (I read a Kindle Unlimited version of the complete series.)
