"Revenge is a dish best served cold, and mine is going to be frozen." - Karen Hamilton.

I absolutely love a good thriller and things do look up if there's a crazy sociopath as the protagonist. Only after I finished reading it did I learn that The Perfect Girlfriend was Karen's debut novel. I finished this book in just two days and for me that is one way of knowing how spectacular the book was. There are a lot of thrillers out there in the market and most of them miss the mark in maintaining consistency. You either find your interest wavering or the characters might turn out a bit too much but this novel is one example of how perfect a psychological thriller can be if you nail it just right.

Elizabeth believes in true love which is why when her boyfriend breaks up with her, she refuses to give up. She strongly feels that Nate belongs only to her and that she has to remind him of how perfect they were together. In search of a fresh start, Elizabeth begins using her middle name Juliette and enrolls to become a stewardess. Her plan of being close to Nate who is a pilot comes true eight months later. Juliette does believe in fate but she also feels that for fate to work, she needs to nudge it a little. She's equipped and plans everything in advance and even rehearses her lines with people around her to set a clear path towards Nate. But hidden behind her obsession, she has a darker past which surfaces only towards end of the book.

I often find it the hardest for a book to become successful when it's cover and title reveals most of the storyline because the reader is already aware of what goes on in those pages. But if the author succeeds in throwing readers off the course and leads them to a different ending, that's a winner. This one is a winner. Juliette's character makes one frightened but also brings tremendous sadness. Her life and childhood sets her on the path that leads her to be the way she is. Having said that, the ending of the book was quite unexpected. Albeit it was a bit rushed, the finesse with which the entire book has been written is stunning. If you're looking for a good thriller, go for it.
