ralyto 's review for:
Timelike Infinity
by Stephen Baxter
Following up on Raft (which I really enjoyed), I found the second book of the Xeelee sequence unconvincing.
I enjoyed the Jasoft Parz chapters, but I found the rest of the characters empty shells (which would be fine if the book did not insist that they are deep), and annoyingly we even have a comic relief character.
In terms of sci-fi, there were some neat ideas; I liked the Spline and the Interface project. Other ideas I found really out there and not sufficiently developed and that took me out of the book. I found the whole plotline with the Friends really lacking.
The pacing was not great (three quarters into the book there were pages and pages describing things like a character aiming a laser that would be better described in a sentence).
I would not recommend this one.
