Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

Please note that I DNF’d this book. I had absolutely no desire to finish the book and I was about 2/3 done.

**What Worked Well**

I did like the footnotes (explained below) after awhile. I had to read some words of ecouragement from those who had finished the book.

World Building - Kristoff does bring a beautiful world of no moonlight - which in itself is a different concept!. I saw the Ribs and how they were built for nobility as well as the slums for the poorer people. I saw the school with the means of traveling between each. It was truly wonderful.

**What Could Be Improved**

For me, I couldn’t connect with Mia as much as I wanted. None of the characters really spoke to me - and I wasn’t feeling a lot of plot development. Something important would happen exceptionally quick, and then times marches on…I’m honestly not sure how much time had passed or when the assassins were going to be chosen.

This is definitely a different style of writing. The book is written as a recorded history. The “author’s voice” - that is the author that is writing the history down - is consistently felt throughout footnotes at the bottom. They’re funny and sarcastic and gives a more playful tone.

I REALLY wanted to enjoy this, I LOVED Empire of Vampire and had pretty high hopes. I don’t think I’m going to give up forever. It could have been not the right time for reading, my mood orr maybe it’s just not for me. I’ll try again in the future to see if it was a mood DNF.
