The Maidens
by Alex Michaelides
i don’t know how to rate this book right now BUT i want to write out some thoughts i’ve had about it…
1. women that are written by men can be done very well BUT when you spend a majority of your time characterizing your main character by her relationships to men (her relationship w her father, husband, male colleagues etc) you aren’t doing that character justice.
2. the last 50 or so pages seemed very … rushed? i felt as if the ending wasn’t the ending but rather the start of the real story. like everything i had just read (all 300+ pages) was background for how the book ultimately ends. WHICH: would be a really fascinating way to set up for a sequel that’s in a completely different genre.
3. i did thoroughly enjoy the greek references, i thought that the quotes and epigraphs throughout the book were tasteful, and the attention to Tension and grief was fascinating. the wording of the story, the descriptors, the visuals you’re given, are astounding.
3.1. undoubtedly the author has a way with words. but i think here he struggled with characters and a practical / logical plot..
4. how are you going to have such an unlikeable and inconsistent main character??!! like she straight up SUCKED and sometimes main characters are meant to suck but i think we were supposed to find her endearing and empathize with her life?
overall: i did enjoy this book. i actually raved about how i didn’t want to finish it because i was enjoying it so much!!
BUT-
BUT!!
i think there were elements of the story itself that weren’t thought out, characters that were tossed around and MURDERED for no reason, and an excess of less important aspects of plot building. this book really would’ve benefited from another few months of revising.
