I was finally convinced to read this book and wanted to find out what the hype is about. Though it didn't catch me in the same way it did so many others, I get why people love it. It has high stakes and deadly challenges and dragons and a romance with a fun dynamic.
I was entertained, it was easy to not think about aspects of the world that didn't really make sense to me in favor of having fun. The magic feels a little random to me, as well as the willingness to let this many people die during their time at the war college. I know I'm not the first person to say this, but it just seems inefficient. Sometimes rules are stated that you simply have to accept, which feels a little convenient. - I don't trust this series to not pull a "oh, we had this one problem for the longest time, but out of plot convenience there will be this sudden magical solution for it"-move in the future. ... Then again: The real world has random rules, too, so who am I to judge?
It also doesn't make that much sense to me that riders have so much rivalry between them, since they will have to work as a team eventually, so why not increase this ingroup feeling?
But all in all these little things are okay given they increase the thrill of the story. It was fun to follow Violet around and maybe I'll continue this series in the future. And hey, it did make me tear up at one point
when Liam died of course
