Bellman & Black
by Diane Setterfield
Diane Setterfield wrote one of my very favorite books of all time, “The Thirteenth Tale.” I knew it wasn’t likely that her follow up effort would be as intricate and gothically perfect as her first novel, and so I was able to enjoy this book more by knowing it would be something different. This reads more like a fairy tale, an allegory of the rich man who wastes his life in work only to realize in death what he missed. The writing is of course beautiful because that what Setterfield does, and I know have an odd admiration for the poetic beauty of the “rook.”
