ok first i’m sorry but this cover makes it look like a gay office romance graphic novel WHICH IS FINE but that’s not what this is 😭😭😭
guardian is a chinese fantasy mystery novel that when translated got broken into 3 books instead of one, and it’s a cross between detective fiction and xianxia………… with a gay romance at its center that makes you think there’s a love at first sight situation but in actuality their yearning transcends time and space.
i so deeply love shen wei and zhao yunlan and priest’s humor when it comes to their awkward lustful yearning/pining/courting bullshit. i enjoy priest’s humor in general until it doesn’t age well.
the mystery arcs are also heartbreaking in ways separate from the central romance. and the worldbuilding is very good. i’d highly recommend this series honestly i intended to read this bit by bit throughout the year but caved in 4 days in. so. if that speaks to the writing and character development and plot and worldbuilding at all
some critiques: i know it’s common for novels set in the current era that border the human and supernatural worlds to make their protagonists “controlling the balance” typically human law enforcement of some kind but. i wish that stopped happening. this is kind of avoided bc the sid only works on supernatural cases but. the title of police officer is still there.
