Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh

5.0

VISIONS OF HEAT was a great sequel to SLAVE TO SENSATION and it introduces readers to even more of this unique world of humans, Psy, and changeling. Nalini Singh is a master at writing deeply emotional reads and much like the first book, this one tugs at your heart strings.

I enjoyed getting to know Faith whose powers as an F-Psy make her an important commodity to her PsyClan family and the Council. Faith was initially much colder than Sascha because emotion wasn’t her gift, but Faith's inherent curiosity and her instincts lead her to grow and develop as a character. I liked seeing her explore what life was like outside her compound and strict role as an F-Psy and realize just how strong she was.

Vaughn makes an interesting match for Faith because on the surface he seems like he'd be too much to handle for someone just learning to embrace her emotions. A sentinel in the DarkRiver pack, Vaughn was dominant and possessive and his animal was much closer to the surface. I especially enjoyed the way Singh demonstrates the balance of animal and human that exists in the changelings and how they celebrate both halves. Sometimes Vaughn was a little too aggressive but he apologized the few times he stepped over the line. There is true beauty in the harmony Singh has given her changeling characters.

Content Warning: medical manipulation of children to suppress emotions; Faith is having visions of the serial killer who murdered her sister; recounting of Vaughn's childhood when his parents joined a cult, abused Vaughn, and then abandoned him and his sister in the jungle resulting in her sister's death.
