Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon
2.0

Cover: 2/5

Story: 2/5

So, I had heard that the series gets better as it progresses, but unfortunately, I didn't see that in this book. It felt like a recycled story of the first one. Same descriptive words, same basic storyline. I do find the overall story interesting. I think this world of the gods mixing in with vampires and werewolves (at least Kenyon's version of them) is a unique take on the usual supernatural stuff. I'm interested in the character Archeron and what his story is. However, I don't think I can sit through each individual story just to find out more about this world or this character.
It's so cheesy and boring when nothing changes except the main characters. The sex scenes and their reactions to each other felt exactly the same as the first book (i.e. burning, moaning, hissing). This particular book's story about Sunshine being the reincarnated soul of Talon's wife was just... ugh... Then she has a part in the dialogue about how her biggest fear is something happening to her hands so that she can't create any more... like burning them. Seriously. We already know she will have to burn her hand with the soul medallion so that just felt stupid to mention it a chapter or two before. Then as he's dying he says "No Sunshine.. not your hands!" Hello... just use the hand you don't paint/draw with! And then Talon just takes the burn away anyway with his healing powers! So she didn't really sacrifice anything! Why couldn't she paint/draw with a burn on her hand? It's not like it won't heal. She's not a musician... or a hand model! Then there's the whole "only a few Dark Hunters have every successfully gotten their souls back" in THOUSANDS of years! But I'm guessing that in each book in this series a Dark Hunter is going to be getting their soul back... all in this one city... all in the same group of friends. It just feels too unbelievable. Which is too bad because I like the overall premise of the story. Sorry... rant over. Honestly, I could go on and on, but I'll stop.

This is definitely not a series I'd be able to binge read cause it would make me crazy. I might be able to do it if I read one every few months or so. I'm not sure if I will be at this point. I'll just have to see if the mood strikes me sometime in the future. I think I probably like the type of paranormal/urban fantasy that follows the same character throughout the books instead of a different couple each book. It just feels too rushed and insta-love for each individual book. You also don't get a lot of time for character development.

Reread? Can't answer this question at this point.
