The Last to Vanish by Megan Miranda

4.0

The good: A wonderfully written atmospheric ode to the mysterious ferocity of nature and our small but rippled interactions within it. This character-driven haunting mystery is both a cozy book you'd like to crawl inside while providing anyone with experience in seasonal outdoor jobs of their youth with a blast to the past that was just starting to recede into their memories. Melancholic and abrupt this book is definitely a must for the nature-loving mystery enthusiast.

The bad: This book was definitely strange in its determination to keep its players rather vague and undefined for a story with such a cast of characters and whodunnit premise. The main character is both likable, but also indistinct to the point where it took me a long time to get through the first half of the book. Almost as if the author was keeping too much to her chest for too long. In the end, the story wraps up quite nicely and you understand her methods a bit more, but it is a shame you have to wade through so much of her hard work to get to that result.
