Katya's World
by Jonathan L. Howard
What worked: First things first, the cover and the blurb really drew me in. Next, one of the characters, Kane, had me getting out the highlighter on my Kindle. He had that dry, wind-up merchant, sense of humour that I absolutely love. Katya’s world definitely had a Star Trek feel to it, Kane being the resident Bones.
The descriptive scenes in this book are really vivid which in turn made me admire the writing voice (difficult in 3rd person).
Katya is a very kick-ass protagonist, she's so determined and strong that if someone tells her not to do something that she thinks is right = IGNORED! She isn't afraid to voice her opinion and throw herself in harm's way because at the end of the day, she wants to live in a world free of fear.
What irked: With this book, I got really confused. The only way I can describe it is like this: “You can’t handle the truth. Wait, I’ll tell you a bit of the truth then later I’ll tell you everything. Then I’ll tell you the real truth because none of that was actually the truth but at the same time, I’m still lying to you because THIS is the truth…April Fools.” I think it was just too many red herrings for me to handle.
After reading the blurb, I was really expecting a dystopian world but what I read was a sci-fi with a bit of steampunk that was revelation after revelation and I never really got a chance to breathe.
Recommended to: Sci-Fi fans and those who like their storylines full of dun dun duh's. Unfortunately, I couldn't connect with this book but I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would get hold of it and never want to let go.
I would give this book.... ***2.5 Stars - This book was ok I suppose but I won't re-read it.***
