Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

2.0

I know I'm in the minority with my dislike of this book, but I just have so many issues with it. Its characters drip with privilege, and its focus on maintaining women's place as good wives and mothers is hard for me to swallow. I get that this is a book of its time, but I don't have to like it. I just find no purpose in the story other than to highlight sisterly love and affection and the strength of family during times of stress and sadness. I wanted so much more from this book, the story, the characters, and the author herself. Beth's sickness and death were more of a focus than the American Civil War, which seemed like an afterthought and it was a missed opportunity. The book's only saving grace is its usefulness as a primary source and Jo. It was all I could do to finish it, but I'm no quitter.
