Having read other things by Elise Kova, I was definitely not expecting the strong "I'm not like other girls" "humble heroine" energy that permeated the beginning of this book. The first part just felt too much like a rough draft with some very weird scenes *cough* the male lead asking our main character if she masturbates before pushing her off a building??? *cough cough*. I think that what kept me going through this book was a kind of sick pleasure almost? There are far too many tropes to name, and yet I found myself looking forward to reading it; somehow it scratches that romantasy heroine adventure itch that I crave. Once all the character relationships are establish, the quality of the book remarkably improves and its genuinely fun seeing the characters interacting. Overall, I wouldn't come to this book looking for a plot, but rather a fun casual romantasy that you just need sometimes to turn the brain off.
