White Teeth by Zadie Smith
5.0
I think it takes a great author to take what at first feels like a very typical "first novel" and turn it into this book. I rarely like books where most characters are unlikable, but this book worked for me that way.
I did possibly wish that some of the fluff in the middle had been spent towards the ending (which I did NOT see coming), but Zadie Smith does such a good job of tying loose ends together (the last 15 pages of this book are the definition of how you do this well) that I don't actually know what I would cut.
Overall, a really great read, and one that I feel should be on more "classics" lists.
