Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

2.0

2 / 5 stars

Sigh... I’m so frustrated with how short these books are because all I can think about is how much better it could be if there was more. Seanan McGuire sets each of these books up with so much story to be told and I feel like we only get a fraction. The nonsense worlds especially need more detail and explanation for me to grasp, personally.

The representation in this series if phenomenal and all of these characters seem to have great personalities, but yet again there isn’t enough time to connect to them to care about them or the plot or what happens to them.

In the past two books I did feel a little more connected with the characters and the story which is why I’m dropping this one to a 2 star, because I just couldn’t make myself care while reading this.

Clearly from the rave reviews, this is a me issue. I see why this series is so beloved. I might have to call it a day and say that this series isn’t for me. I love a lot of character work and world building in my fantasy and I feel like this series lacks that.

You might catch me reading In An Absent Dream though, because I’m very curious to see why that one is so hyped.
