A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers

adventurous lighthearted medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? Yes

Don't believe the comp titles. If you go into this expecting a Wayfarers level of quality, you'll be bitterly disappointed. Yes, it's queer-normative sci-fi with a focus on found family, but it's clunky and cringey and nowhere near as well written. (Jessie Mihalik is literally right there as a comp author for cheesy feel-good space opera.) None of these characters are emotionally equipped to be in the military.

Maybe I'm being too harsh here but I had such high hopes for this series.
