The Dry by Jane Harper

5.0

I have been craving a really good, edge-of-your-seat, mystery and am happy to report that The Dry delivered that desire for me.

This book is pitched on here as "atmospheric" and I think that's the perfect way to describe the world that it throws you into. From the beginning, we are scrambling to keep up with what's going on. We know Falk, we know snippets of his past, and we only know that the town he's visiting hates him. But WHY? What truly got me about this book is the constant string I was kept on throughout every chapter. I loved that the mystery of the entire book was tangible and up front, but there was a secondary mystery also being solved right alongside it. The characters were both likable and unlikeable. The town was both nostalgic and haunting. And the mystery was both exciting and frustrating (just how I like it). I really enjoyed trying to figure things out and being constantly led to different conclusions right up until the end. The pace is slow but compelling and full of great storytelling. This is definitely one that'll be up there with my favorites this year.
