Chain-Gang All-Stars
by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
It’s not that I don’t appreciate this book and its messaging: it just wasn’t for me.
The commentary was too heavy handed for my liking, the footnotes really took me out of the story, there were too many characters and not enough back story to feel any kind of emotional connection to them.
Also personal preference but I just aren’t a fan of action or fight scenes and that was honestly most of the book?
My favourite part was the backstory about “the Influencer”- a device that heightens every sense and is misused in order to produce the worst pain to have ever been felt. I found this concept very interesting and scary because I’m sure it’s not too far ourside the realms of reality. The same can be said for other elements of the book too really, it’s almost not right to categorise this as a “sci fi”/dystopian and more of just a prediction of the future of the prison system and American culture.
