This was honestly pretty disappointing. I didn't much care for the perspective in Oryx and Crake, much preferring the world of Ren and Toby from The Year of the Flood, so when this book was going to converge their storylines, I was excited to get back in their heads. Unfortunately, Toby is in many ways reduced to a pining and jealous woman. There's glimpses of the old, astute, complex Toby, but so much is subsumed by her internal monologue about Zeb that it's extremely disappointing. Ren and Amanda are both relegated to background characters, and the story doesn't progress so much as return to tell us other people's backstories. I didn't really care to learn about Zeb, and I suppose since I was expecting the story to move forward it was an enormous let down. 1 star.
