This Book of the Month Book of the Year Finalist was such a charming, whimsical blast from the past! If you want a heartwarming read that brings you back to the books of your childhood, look no further.

Jack Masterson is the author of the bestselling children’s “Clock Island” book series. He’s become a recluse and a new book hasn’t come out in years- now he announces a contest, where the winner will win the only copy of his latest book and can do with it what they want. Jack has handpicked the contestants, all who came to him when they were children looking for help. Lucy is eager to win so she can have the financial means to adopt Christopher, the young orphan she loves.

This is what I wish “The Inheritance Games” were like! We all know the format of these books (very “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) but Shaffer updated it for adults. While predictable, this book filled me with joy and brought me back to the love of reading I had as a kid. Highly recommend this nostalgic, endearing read.
