Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali

Okay, after my previous update on being bored, I grew a bit more interested and I believe it's credited to the fact that the sentimentality temporarily wore off. However, afterwards, the story didn't have a particularly fresh narrative trajectory and by the end, I wasn't moved.

I like Raif well enough and after my previous update, I found myself able to connect to his emotions and tumultuous mind. But sometimes, his emotions were so overwrought that it felt like somebody in real life who opened up to you and, day after day, they just wallow in their own misery.

Above its story, I believe the themes of loss of self and change were far more intriguing. To see the change in Raif from reticence to opening up (to a glimmer of wanting to be more confident when realising his and Maria's bond was going stale) was interesting. I think that's because at those points, Raif and what he represents took center stage instead of the sentimental production of his and Maria's story.

The writing was nice too, had some lovely quotes...which I just realised I accidentally deleted.
