I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

3.0

This book started off so strong, as someone who's driven through rural backroads at night, Reid does a wonderful job of capturing the tension and creepiness of this setting which stays throughout the book. For the first time in a while I was actually feeling a sense of dread with what I was reading which carried on when the main character meets her boyfriend's parents. Then there's the flashes of dialogue that happen in the present that only add to the sense of dread and mystery.

With such a good start, and the positive reviews I had heard of this book, I had high hopes for the rest of the book.

Unfortunately, this book is an example of a good story that is ruined by its ending.

Without spoiling too much all I can say is that the twist was a letdown because of how cliched and underwhelming it was. I expected better for the hype the book got as well as the author's writing talent demonstrated earlier in the book.
