Run Time by Catherine Ryan Howard

4.0

Irish soapstar Adele Rafferty has moved to LA but things aren't working out on the job front. When she's offered the lead in a budget horror movie that's being filmed back in Ireland she jumps at the chance. When she arrives on set it quickly becomes clear that things are a bit different to how she's used to productions being run, and it soon becomes a case of life imitating art as events unfold on and off set.

Run Time is CRH's sixth novel and once again she's managed to keep things original and fresh. This is a book, about a movie, about a book. Yes that all sounds very meta and confusing but trust me, it makes sense and isn't confusing while reading! It's a really unique spin on storytelling, somewhat similar to the style of her previous novel The Nothing Man.

While The Nothing Man & 56 Days were crime fiction, I think Run Time falls more into the psychological thriller category. CRH said at her launch that this one was more of a 'fun' novel than her previous two books, and I can see how it would be fun to write. She's taken all the best tropes from the 90's and 00's slasher movies which gives Run Time a hint of nostalgia alongside the freshness of how unique the book is. However, I still found it creepy, twisty and suspenseful, leaving me sufficiently spooked at certain places 🙈 I was hooked within the first few pages and absolutely flew through it wanting to know how things played out.

It doesn't quite knock The Nothing Man off the top spot as my favourite thriller but Run Time is a great read in its own right. CRH is a master at her craft!
