Bluebird
by Ciel Pierlot
DID NOT FINISH
DNF @ 44%, page 201
(I imagine if I had finished it, it would have been a 2.5-3 star read)
Man, I'm so sad about this one! I was super super excited about this book and some of my favorite booktokkers had hyped it up, but ultimately I felt like Bluebird just didn't hit the mark. The pacing, while fast, didn't hold my attention. I wasn't drawn back to this story, the stakes aren't strong enough, and the characters are bland even while trying to be full of personality. The writing style is reminiscent of Gideon The Ninth without the star quality that sets Gideon apart. I can see that the author might have been inspired by Tamsyn Muir.
I really wanted to like this book. I love science fiction, I'm a lesbian, I love gunslingers! I just couldn't connect to this story and ultimately I didn't care about any of the characters or their stakes enough to stay invested in the story. There's a part of me that wants to keep reading just to be a completionist but at the end of the day, there are so many books on my TBR and not as much time.
