Infinite Country by Patricia Engel

5.0

I read this book almost a year ago to the day I'm posting this review and I actually had a long hiatus from reading this novel but that no means takes away from this book’s excellence. A beautiful tale about family, longing and place - an insight into a world that I have got no reference of. This novel is short but covers a lot of ground, Talia's journey escaping a reform school in the Andes to re-join her family in New York, Colombia's history with violence and the undocumented immigrant experience. Not only does it cover a vast amount of narrative within a low page count but the emotional depth of this book is also intense. The splitting of a family, longing for country and psychological pain of violence is raw throughout, this novel highlights the suffering of mixed status families.

Infinite Country is powerful and thought provoking and still sits with me.
