Landscape Painting Now: From Pop Abstraction to New Romanticism by Barry Schwabsky

4.0

Predictably falls into some art world cliches (labeling Will Cotton as a landscape painter doesn’t suddenly make his work any less insipid). Despite it’s gesture toward the global, New York and LA-based artists are still over-represented, contributing to a larger lack of discussion of the relationship between place and art. Schwabsky does a great job of putting the artists in context with contemporary art and art history, but I wish there had been more of a gesture outwards towards their context in the larger world. Though he does eventually get there in the final section, which focuses more on modern relationships to specific landscapes. And even without as wide a curatorial lens as I would like, it was still an incredibly fascinating look though my favorite art form and my favorite genre of said art form. There is an exciting level of intellectual and emotional depth to the much of the work shown here. The section on New Romanticism especially!
