Alan Moore's prose is sprightly, dense, and very funny, especially in the sections set in his alternative London, a sort of Platonic ideal of which the real city is a mere shadow. The book starts strong, with a mysterious and intriguing prologue, then settles into an entertaining yarn as our young protagonist discovers the aforementioned hidden city and its weird and wonderful denizens. It runs out of steam towards the end, but this is the first in a series, so that can be forgiven as long as the subsequent entries deliver on the promise of this one.
