Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People about Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

5.0

This is a book I wish I had grown up with - to further educate myself about racism in the country I was born in. I have come across most of the concepts in the book but not the history and specific examples. I studied history and sociology in school, racism was taught during black history month mostly in relation to America - there is so much in this book that I only found out about this year and should have been taught in school!

The author first discusses her blog post from 2014 and explains her reasons for feeling this way and why the book was written. She discusses racism in relation to history, white privilege, feminism, race, class and explains structural racism, intersectionality and the fear of black people, immigrants and people of colour. She talks about her own personal experiences, provides examples from interviews, newspaper articles, books - everything is referenced.

There are some descriptions of experiences that feel all too familiar being a south asian child of immigrants. I would recommend this book to everyone I know - to try and understand the history of racism in the UK and what some black people and people of colour have had to face and continue to do so.
