Pointless would be the best way to describe this book. While the concept was brilliant, it was so poorly executed that it was painful to get through. The beginning started off promising, but rapidly went downhill. The boys' objectification of the girls was uncomfortable, and did not achieve what it was meant to. It was extremely slow. The fact that the first sister's death took 200 pages and the others were only given a poorly described paragraph didn't help. Eugenides also described the house in which the girls lived in, and portrayed the house deteriorating as the family fell apart. This would have been nice, if the house wasn't mentioned in nearly every page, with unnecessary details. If the house description was removed, this book would only be 80 pages long.

Overall it was a slow, dull read which is perfect for putting you to sleep.
