Department of Mind-Blowing Theories by Tom Gauld

3.0

I really love Gauld’s art style and sense of humor. I’ve read a decent amount of his books at this point and they’ve all been hits, in my opinion. The last one of his that I read, Baking With Kafka, might be my favorite because all of its jokes were centered around literary fiction and the struggles of being a writer. It was clever, quirky, and a very funny.

Department of Mind-Blowing Theories is similar to Baking With Kafka in structure, but the topic here is science-related humor, which I did not know before I picked this up. I am not very good with science. Naturally, this book and I didn’t mesh as well as his other works.

This isn’t a criticism of the book. I showed some of it to my wife, who thought it was much funnier than I did. This is a matter of taste, as well as a classic case of left brain/right brain. All that said, I did still crack up here and there. This one just wasn’t for me, which is all good.
