The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
4.25
challenging dark emotional tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes

Set in the backdrop of post Mexican War of Independence, our main characters Beatrice and Andres work to rid Beatrice's new home of it's sinister ghosts. In my opinion, The Hacienda is a historical fiction that utilizes the haunted house horror trope and a small forbidden romance subplot to enrich the character-driven story.

Everything about this book is slow, dark and tense. I could feel the tension between Beatrice, the house, the political environment, and of course Padre Andres. I could absolutely see the parallels between this and Rebecca, with the haunted second wife, however I believe The Hacienda succeeded more fully in creating a sense of Beatrice's dread and unwantedness. The characters are richly woven throughout the story, and the historical component reigns supreme.

I personally love when a historical fiction causes me to deep-dive into the actual history it's based off of, and this one did the trick. I now have spent hours looking through the history of the Mexican War of Independence and political tension in the aftermath.

If you are looking for a historical fiction with elements of horror and a tense romantic subplot The Hacienda is a great choice!
