The Last Thing He Told Me
by Laura Dave
I picked up this book 48 hours ago just for a peak. Now I am writing a review for it. I dare you to put it down. I cannot believe I am saying this but: I absolutely loved what Laura Dave did here.
There is love between a man and woman (Hannah). This romantic love is filled with mutual respect and kindness, as well as passion. Laura Dave gives us that passion without using any elements of sexuality. I am not sure how to explain this but she writes this passion in such a classy way. Well, maybe simply because the relationship between this man and woman is such a classy relationship filled with so much love, care, respect, and therefore joy. I am not sure why I appreciated this, but I did. As I was reading, I was keep thinking, I hope everyone gets to taste a relationship like this man's and Hannah’s.
Although the story is a crime thriller, what you get in this novel is a hands-on parenting lesson for everyone who is or plans to be a parent. I think this is the most powerful aspect of the novel. The main character Hannah Hall who is a stepmother to a 16-year-old gives us an epic parenting lesson throughout the novel. She accepts her stepdaughter’s agency from day zero. She respects her with utmost empathy and kindness. She does this not to please her new husband, no. She does this because it is simply the way it should be. And Hannah Hall is just admirable for this simple fact. I just absolutely loved how in this crime thriller, with so many twists and turns, Laura Dave brilliantly chose to focus on the relationship between an admirable stepmom and her stepdaughter.
“It’s never about someone else the moment you realize it is up to you to get yourself to a better place. It’s only about figuring out how to get there.”
