Highland Betrayal
by Alyson McLayne
Hands down, my favorite of the entire series. Maggie is badass in every way. From her strategic mind, to her wicked dagger & archery abilities, to her ability to intellectually match Collum in every way. I want to be Maggie.
This installment explores the crushing sadness women feel when they are among a group of men who do not recognize their value and consider them an asset to the team, despite the great lengths taken to train and demonstrate their acumen in a skill set.
Together the two have to wrestle with this dynamic that is both traditionally imposed on them and alive between them. Neither character holds the “higher ground” and one of my favorite moments in the book is when Maggie hurts Collum and then has to make the reach to apologize. At the same time, Collum lashes out and makes her cry. It’s very human of both characters and an accurate dimension of breaking down a worldview in the effort to reach for something more important and valuable- and equal partnership.
Here the plot thickens, we begin to understand that all the attacks are connected in a larger strategic maneuver against the united 6. Maggie’s honed sense of danger and keen observations will ultimately save Collum and his clan, revealing a history of sexual abuse in Collum’s clan that proves to be the real curse that Collum must break to create safe world for everyone he loves.
