This book surprised me with its dark humor and it’s grotesque scenes, but the depraved and desperate characters and all the ways society fails to live up to its basic promises didn’t actually shock me. The way humans have been living for centuries—accepting our lot in life and suffering or treating those “below us” cruelly—hasn’t changed. This book rightfully reflects how religion and power combine into a noxious force, stripping people of their will to make change to their lives. The writing was exceptional, as usual for Moshfegh, and I found myself reading late into the night despite the horror of what was happening to these people I’d come to know (if not like). I recommend reading it if you can stomach it!
