Based on the synopsis, I expected this to be about how a group of women used books to stay strong during wartime; instead it was a book about a family during wartime trying to keep their health and home, sniff out a possible spy, and not appear suspicious themselves…and also a couple of them happen to like books. The jump to 2016 answers a couple questions at the end, but is about 10-15 pages through the whole book, so it felt out of place.
I would file this under beach reads - it’s a fine story and an easy read.
