dknippling 's review for:
A history of the spice trade during the 15th to 17th centuries, as seen through the lenses of Venice, Portugal, and Amsterdam, each of which controlled a significant swath of the trade for a time, only to be replaced through politics, finance, and fashion. No egos seem to be spared--it was a brutal time of slash and burn cultures on the prowl.
Chattily written and well researched, the book made me feel the weight of what I wasn't reading as much as what I did, if that makes any sense. I find myself more interested in the period, at any rate.
