A Tarnished Canvas
by Anna Lee Huber
This series is near and dear to my heart, and I have loved following Kiera and Gage through both their personal lives as well as their professional ones (investigative sleuths).
This particular book finds the couple back in Edinburgh (my favorite spot for the two) and investigating the partial collapse of a second story while they were attending an art auction. They must determine if the deceased was targeted, someone else attending or even Kiera herself. There's also a side narrative as Kiera is nervous and a bit leery of presenting her own showing of paintings depicting portraits of everyday people rather than the more elite ton that she is usually commissioned to capture.
As usual the mystery is well-plotted and executed, and I'm always happy to see their secondary cast step in to help uncover the villain. I was especially thrilled to see the return of Bonnie Brock Kincaid to the series as he is such an intriguing and mysterious character, and he and Kiera share some very fraught and tension-filled scenes here. Things are always a bit livelier when Kincaid makes an appearance.
I know I've said this before, but Huber is a master at crafting entertaining, interesting books. Her research into the locations is always evident and spot-on, her characters come alive from the page, her plots are both original and engaging. She employs humor at just the right moment as well as gravitas when the scene calls for it.
It's a pleasure when I hear that a new Lady Darby book is on its way, and if you are looking to try out this series (and I hope you do), it's best to start at the beginning with The Anatomist's Wife as the story builds as it goes along.
Very well done (per usual).
My sincere thanks to the author, NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group / Berkley for providing the free early arc of A Tarnished Canvas for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
