Jackson has a gift for writing absolutely heart-wrenching accounts of how our society and systems fail children. Between this and Grown I'm not sure I can take any more heartbreak from her.
This book's focus on the failure of systems, particularly in marginalized and poor communities was hard to read, and it was harder to read because I know this is based in truth. These systems are designed to serve certain people, and people like Monday are not them. Claudia was a wonderful protagonist throughout the book - it was a hard read but she was such a strong character that I couldn't stop reading.
