I enjoyed A Dowry of Blood. S.T. Gibson's choice to tell the story through letters, reminiscent of Dracula, was appropriate and added to its gothic, intimate feel. I also appreciated how the author reimagined the “three sisters” by providing brief character backgrounds, altering their genders, and amending their relationship dynamic.

Sexual content is consistent throughout—graphic and sensual, yet not vulgar. My biggest complaint is that the book glossed over historical events, which felt like a missed opportunity. Incorporating even a small amount of historical context could have added more depth to the setting.

"In hindsight, I should have paid more attention to the convenience with which you arrived. There are no angels in this world to accompany the dying in their final moments, only pickpockets and carrion birds." (Page 28)

A beautifully dark and lyrical retelling.
