I really enjoyed this book overall! The setting and unorthodox finale were very well done, and the overall motif of a sleepy town with monsters in the wilderness resonates with me strongly. I also liked how the romantic subplot existed, but didn’t suffocate the overall narrative like what often happens in fantasy. As others have said, there’s a “spooky” vibe here and it’s really done well overall.

There were a couple of problems, though. One big one is that a line in the description (“They point to a tribe of devilish and mystical creatures who promise to fulfill the residents' deepest desires, however grand and impossible, for just a small favor”) is actually a large spoiler and makes a lot of threads in the plot easy to guess - it’s also not explored much until over halfway through the book, so I can’t understand why it had to be included as a point in the overview. Another issue (although more personal to me) is that a lot of animals are killed throughout the book; I really hate this and while this is more of a TW, I do feel like it was unnecessary overall.

4 stars!
