Policing the City: An Ethno-graphic by Frédéric Debomy, Didier Fassin

dark informative medium-paced

4.0

An illustrated anthropology report about racism and violence in the French police force. The text is taken from a larger paper, but added illustrations and comic panels really reinforce the content of the text. Rather than read words about cops doing terrible things to up their numbers and harass poor and minority peoples, you can see those things happening. While it's short and a relatively quick read, it's also a gut punch of reality that police violence isn't an American institution. Anywhere police are left unchecked and set to meet quotas instead of helping people, things are going to go terribly and violence will be the results.

The art is stark and often severe in a watch that fits perfectly with the bleak nature of the text. It's amazing to see what these cops were willing to say in front of a researcher, knowing they were recording a lot of what was going on. The entire thing is worth studying by anyone interested in public policy and the violence embedded in law enforcement.
